THE BIRTH OF MY BUSINESS During my pregnancy with Elijah, there was some concern that he was going to be small at birth. I started my research and came across many articles that discussed the benefits of carrying your baby in carriers that simulate the womb. A "kangaroo carry", where low birth weight babies thrived from being carried. I had found what I wanted, to carry my soon-to-be-born baby in a "pouch". The hard part was over, or so I thought. I couldn't find the product I was looking for: 100% cotton, light-weight, breathable, adjustable, soft-colored and comfortable. Desperate to find what I needed, I decided to make a carrier for my baby. The first sling I ever made was out of 100% cotton and hand stamped with sun, moon and stars and became a second home for my 9lb 10 oz baby (he was much bigger than they thought). I was sold on the idea of a sling and Eli and I loved it. As I wore Eli around I was often asked where I found my sling. When I responded that I had made it, I had others asking for them. I thus ventured out into the sling-making business. As Eli grew, so did my interests. I added new products (all handmade by me) and returned to school to learn more about childbirth and ways in which I could help women to achieve an even greater birth. While pregnant with my second child, Asa, I embarked on a second voyage - toys that teach. I was amazed by Elijah and how quickly he learned and how hungry he was for more information. Eli and I started receiving catalogs and he would help pick out the toys. When the boxes arrived he would play and let me know which items were hits. Asa joined the family business. If he's not on my hip riding around in a sling, he's sure to be found testing the latest in toy arrivals. Mommy and Me is very close to my heart and represents the greatest aspects of my life, my children. Over the last eight years Mommy and Me has grown and changed, but my core ideas have remained unchanged. I still hand make each and every sling from start to finish. I still believe that quality is the most important part of a truly great product and above all else, any product or toy that can help make parenting an even greater reward is something I want to be involved with.
